What is ESWT (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy)?
Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is a treatment method that applies high-intensity pressure waves to the body. Extracorporeal shock waves are acoustic pressure waves and are applied using a special device. Inside the ESWT device, sound waves are generated. These sound waves have approximately 10 times the power of ultrasound waves.

For Which Conditions is ESWT Used?
Soft Tissue Applications:
- Heel Spur
- Lateral Epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow) and Medial Epicondylitis (Golfer’s Elbow)
- Calcific Tendinitis of the Shoulder
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Impingement Syndrome
- Connective Tissue Injuries
- Muscle Pain and Injuries
Hard Tissue Applications:
- Nonunion and delayed union of fractures
- Fixation of loosened cementless prostheses
- Stress Fractures
How Does ESWT Work?
ESWT increases blood circulation in the treated area, activating the body’s own healing mechanisms. It relieves muscle spasms, stimulates collagen production, and promotes regeneration of damaged tissues, thus accelerating healing.
What Are the Advantages of ESWT?
ESWT is a non-invasive treatment method. It does not require anesthesia or special preparation. Although some pain may be felt during the first session, tolerance to the pain usually develops as treatment progresses. Apart from mild redness and swelling of the skin, there are no significant side effects. Rest is not required after the treatment.
How is ESWT Applied?
The duration of the treatment is approximately 5-10 minutes. It is applied with intervals of 3 to 5 days. The treatment usually consists of 3 to 5 sessions. Some pain may be experienced after the first session, but this is temporary. Many patients feel the benefit even after the first treatment. Regular treatment results in significant improvement in pain and other symptoms.
Does the Condition Recur After ESWT Treatment?
One of the major advantages of ESWT is its long-lasting effect. Clinical studies have shown that the condition does not recur within 1-2 years after treatment. Since the mechanism uses the body’s own healing processes, the recurrence rate is very low. Starting the treatment early is one of the most important factors for treatment success.
Are There Any Side Effects of ESWT?
ESWT has shown no adverse effects on the musculoskeletal system. However, mild to moderate pain, redness, bruising, or soreness may occur shortly after the treatment. These effects are temporary.
