Aqua Therapy / Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy (Aquatic Rehabilitation) is a treatment method that uses the properties of water to address functional losses in conditions such as cerebral palsy, stroke, spinal cord injuries, and similar diseases.

What is Hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy (pool therapy) is a treatment method that uses the physical properties of water to treat diseases and functional losses. Water therapy is one of the oldest treatment methods used in physical therapy. The heat and hydrostatic properties of water are utilized. Thanks to the buoyancy force of water, the load on the body is reduced, making it possible to perform movements that are normally difficult or very painful.

What are the benefits of hydrotherapy?

  • Plays an important role in reducing pain and sensitivity.
  • Increases joint mobility and helps muscles relax.
  • Helps improve respiratory muscles and allows the body to use oxygen more efficiently.
  • Increases muscle strength and endurance by using water’s resistance.
  • Difficult and tiring exercises that cannot be done outside the water become simple and enjoyable, increasing patient confidence and motivation.
  • Due to reduced effects of gravity in water, some diseases heal faster and recovery accelerates.
  • Prevents excessive load on muscles and makes movements easier.
  • Helps activate the lymphatic system.
  • Assists in controlling edema.

Hydrotherapy applications in neurological diseases

In patients with spinal cord injuries, weak or absent muscle strength may cause standing, walking, or certain exercises to overload joints and lead to injury. Using the buoyancy of water, these exercises can be performed more easily and safely in the pool. Standing and walking activities that are difficult on dry land become easier in water due to buoyancy, also helping increase muscle strength.

In diseases such as hemiplegia (stroke) and multiple sclerosis (MS), activities that are difficult on dry land due to muscle spasms can be performed more comfortably in water due to the muscle relaxation effect.

Hydrotherapy applications in orthopedic diseases

After orthopedic surgeries, especially when immediate full weight bearing on a joint is contraindicated, hydrotherapy is beneficial because the load on the joint is reduced in water. Exercises done on dry land may be challenging during rehabilitation, so using the buoyancy effect in the pool allows for easier exercise.

What are the main diseases treated with hydrotherapy?

  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • Muscular Dystrophy
  • Guillain-Barre Syndrome
  • Musculoskeletal Injuries
  • Stroke
  • Spinal Cord Injuries
  • Joint Injuries
  • Post-fracture and Post-surgical Conditions
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Rheumatic Diseases
  • Sports Injuries
  • Soft Tissue Injuries
  • Obesity
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Balance Problems
  • Poliomyelitis

How is hydrotherapy applied at ROMMER?

At our center, hydrotherapy is applied individually under the supervision of a physiotherapist after examination by a specialist physician. Our pool uses thermal water, which provides additional healing benefits. Hydrotherapy is especially beneficial for mobilization in patients with cerebral palsy, stroke, and similar conditions, contributing to the success of rehabilitation.
